Why I would pour it carefully
Laphroaig 10 is the bottle I recommend when the drinker wants character more than comfort. It smells medicinal, coastal, smoky, and a little wild: iodine, seaweed, ash, TCP-like peat, and damp wood, with a malt sweetness underneath that keeps it from becoming pure shock value.
The important thing is to frame it honestly. This is not a safe crowd-pleaser. Some people taste it and never forget it for the wrong reason; others find exactly the whisky they have been looking for. That makes it a brilliant bottle for adventurous drinkers, Islay fans, and anyone who enjoys flavours that feel elemental rather than polished.
I would pour it in a small measure first, preferably after dinner, and let the glass open for a few minutes. If it lands, it lands hard. If it does not, at least the drinker has met one of whisky's most unmistakable personalities.
A divisive Islay classic that rewards drinkers who want personality over politeness.
