Why I would pour this when bourbon needs backbone
Elijah Craig Small Batch is the bourbon I would reach for when Buffalo Trace feels too gentle and Woodford Double Oaked feels too sweet. It brings vanilla bean, sweet fruit, fresh mint, baking spice, smoke, nutmeg, caramel, oak, toasted nuts, and enough 47% strength to give the pour structure.
The useful thing here is balance between everyday and serious. It is not barrel proof, not rare, and not trying to be precious. But it has more oak, proof, and maturity of flavour than many soft entry bourbons, which makes it a good step-up bottle for someone beginning to care about American whiskey.
I would use it for Father's Day, Thanksgiving, housewarmings, or a promotion gift for a bourbon drinker. It can handle an Old Fashioned, but it also has enough shape to drink neat without feeling like a cocktail-only bottle.
A sturdy small-batch bourbon with enough oak and proof to feel like a proper step up.
